I am not a slavish disciple. He is not my only source of insight. I have drawn on the reading of a lifetime. Nor do I agree with Goulder in all his conclusions. Indeed, I have broken with my mentor at significant points in my story. The most striking disagreement will be on the “order” that organized the Gospel of Luke.

I suppose I would have been shocked by the possibility. Everything I knew about this Jesus, presumably from the Bible, would have screamed out in opposition to such a thought. Jesus was clearly defined for me as something good. Jews were clearly defined for me in church, in Sunday school, and through what I had been taught was in the Bible itself, as something evil. To say that Jesus was a Jew would have been, to my limited mind, almost an oxymoron, and certainly a contradiction in terms. It is amazing how ignorance and prejudice can distort history.
